Greetings from Dean

Institute of Medicine, established in 1972, is one of the five technical institutes under Tribhuvan University. With 2449 students enrolled with the Institute of Medicine, we look after almost 25% of the technical and professional students of Tribhuvan University. Similarly, we offer a large number of courses in different disciplines in health sciences.

Within a period of 31 years, IOM has seen a number of changes in its role. Originally, it started with a mandate to train all categories of health manpower for health services in the country and it had a very limited role in providing the health care services: it served mainly through the hospitals and health institutions of Ministry of Health. The situation changed in 1983 when the TU Teaching Hospital was established. IOM then became a provider of tertiary health care of the best quality in the country. Establishment of a modern, well-equipped hospital was followed by the initiatives to start PG programmes: starting with MD in general practice in collaboration with Faculty of Medicine of University of Calgary. A number of PG programmes followed, for example, MD in ophthalmology, diplomas in gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesiology, radiodiagnosis and child health. The situation continued as such till 1990. After 1990, it has discontinued with a number of certificate level courses but still continue to conduct certificate courses in nursing, laboratory technology, pharmacy and radiography.

However there was a rapid increase in the number of postgraduate courses in clinical disciplines and public health, though all the diploma level courses in clinical disciplines have been discontinued.
Currently Institute of Medicine conducts 5-certificate level, 9-bachelor level and 23 postgraduate master level courses through its 7 constituent and 4 affiliated campuses and colleges.
All the certificate level courses at IoM campuses are open only to Nepalese citizens. Most of the bachelor and postgraduate level courses are open to eligible foreign candidates.

Institute of Medicine has created a very high standing among the medical colleges in the region. In recognition of this fact, World Health Organization (WHO), on the occasion of its 50th anniversary celebration had awarded one of the best institutes award in support of Primary Health Care to the Institute of Medicine in 1999. It is recognized as one of the ten innovative medical institutions in the South East Asia region. Medical Councils of Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have recognized its graduates. Similarly, its graduates have a very high pass and acceptance rates in USMLE and US and Japanese universities and hospitals. Graduates of this institute have been working all over the world. This fact has attracted a large number of students from India, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to our MBBS, MD/MD and MPH programmes. Currently, more than 15% of the students in its MBBS and MD/MD courses are from different foreign countries.
