It is my great pleasure to wish you all on the occasion of Thirty Eight Institute of Medicine (IOM) Day. Established in 1972 to provide health education to paramedics, IOM has emerged as premier medical institute in the production of health manpower from certificate level to MCh. (Master of Chirurgie) level. IOM is playing a role model in providing excellent medical education, health services and research work, not only in Nepal, but in the whole world. IOM products are providing best medical services all over the world. Under the umbrella of IOM, there are four programs in
Certificate level, 11 programs in Bachelor level, 26 programs in Masters level and 4 programs in MCh. IOM has already started the process of starting DM (Doctor of Medicine) in medicine, postgraduate programme in dental subjects, Ph D programme in nursing and microbiology.

In the field of research, various activities are taking place under the umbrella of the Research Department. Research day have been observed recently with the publication of a research journal. Various research activities are taking place in different departments with the research fund provided by the Maharajgunj Campus.

The Medical Education Department has given teachers training to all teachers of IOM. Now, the training is being given to teachers of affiliated colleges. The Medical Education Department is now being proposed as National Centre of Health Professions Education, and this proposal has already been passed by Implementation Committee of IOM.

The Information Technology department is expanding and providing the best information technology service to all the faculties. The making of documentary featuring activities of IOM is in final stage with the help of Department of International Relation, Maharajgunj Campus.

In service sector provided by IOM, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital is providing best medical service to all Nepali citizen. TUTH has successfully gone ahead in the field of Kidney transplantation. The new MRI and digital X-ray is arriving very soon in TUTH. Fund has been allocated to new CT Scan. The newly established Mahmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre have started functioning. The OPD service and indoor wards has started along with non-invasive cardiac service. The three modular OT will be installed soon and the process for instalement of new cath lab has started.

The construction of new emergency building with the help of the Bhatbhateni Department Store and Supermarket is taking place in hurricane speed. Services in Ganesh Man Bhawan and new paediatrics ward has started and is expanding. The proposed Suresh Wagle Cancer Center is in the planning phase.

Various steps have been taken to improve all the Nursing campuses. The hospital in the Ayurvedic campus is in the final stage of completion. To improve the quality of education in all affiliated medical, dental and nursing colleges, teachers training programme have been conducted for the staff to improve the standard of education in these institute. Similarly, the establishment of public health campus under IOM is under process.

Enormous effort have been made to make IOM an autonomous institute. The Executive Council has already decided to give autonomy to the IOM, but we should not be fully satisfied with what we have achieved. We still have to do a lot. At this stage, all us should unite together and work very hard to make IOM autonomous and become a medical university - one of the best medical university in the world.
