On completion of
the MD (General Practice) Residency training programme, the graduate
will be able to provide comprehensive and effective management of common
health problems including timely emergency and life saving surgeical
and obstetrical intervention.
Course Objectives:
On completion of
the course, the trainee will be able to meet objectives related to clinical,
preventive/community health, managerial, training, communication and
professional performance.
Objectives related to
clinical performance:
The resident will
be able to:
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all common and derious health
problems and manage them completely.
- Diagnose health problems on the basis of information collected from
patient, relative physical examination and available diagnostic procedures
and facilities.
- Provide effective and appropriate medical and surgical management
for health problems in the context of the resources available.
Objectives related to
preventive/ community health performance:
The resident will
be able to:
- Co-ordinate and implement health promotion and disease prevention
activities;
- Demonstrate a through knowledge of major health problems facing people
in the district she/he is working;
- Develop the staff of the health posts with clinical administrative
and health promotional support and training.
- Visit the health post regularly or as required.
Objectives related
to managerial performance
The resident
- will be able to effectively manage the staff and carry out administrative
responsibilities of the hospital.
Objectives related
to training
The resident will be able to:
- Arrange and/or conduct appropriate in service training for hospital
staff and others.
- Provide appropriate education or training to various levels of health
care students assigned to the hospital.
Objectives related
to communication
The resident will be able to:
- Establish effective referral system.
- Develop and co-ordinate effective communication and co-operation amongst
all health care services (both governmental and non governmental)
- Develop and maintain effective support for the health posts.
Objectives related
to professional Performance
The resident will:
- Maintain current knowledge of health care problems through participation
in appropriate continuing health education programmes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and consistently within the health care objectives
of the government.
- Maintain personal and professional standards consistent with his role
as a lader in health care term.
These objectives attempt to address the needs of people in Nepal and
may be accomplished in a number of ways. The IOM has developed the MD
(GP) programme to address these objectives in a specific way using a
definition of General Practice which will differ from that in other
countries at other centres.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The candidate
must have completed MBBS or equivalent course including internship.
- Candidates must be registered with the Nepal Medical Council.
- New rules or regulations formulated by Tribhuvan University, Institute
of Medicine will apply to this programme as they come into effect.
- One year experience in any government, university or charitable hospital.

attempts to provide trainers with experience in fundamental areas of
knowledge as skill development prior to becoming involved in work experiences
outside the Kathmandu valley.

Evaluation:
The overall assessment
shall be based on the combination of the on going internal assessment
as well as three annual examination.
Internal Assessment
Following each rotation,
a subjective evaluation will be made by the designated preceptor based
on performance during the rotation, log book etc. In addition an examination
may be conducted by the Dept. of General Practice and/ or respective
speciality departments. These assessments will represent 20% of the
final marks for theoretical and practical knowledge. Only if the residents
pass the internal assessment at the end of rotation, will they be permitted
to proceed to the final examination.
Final Assessment
The final assessment
will be held at the end of each year. An external examiner will be engaged
to ensure quality control. The assessment will be divided into theoretical
and practical components.
